Research Programme

The SWBSG has identified research required to clarify the relationship between wind farms and populations of birds across Scotland. This includes cumulative impacts as the industry becomes an established part of the Scottish landscape and the number of turbines increases. It  also needs to clarify the effects, both positive and negative, of habitat management within the land holdings owned and managed by wind farm development companies.

The delivery of research needs to go hand in hand with the a catalogue of data on the numbers and distribution of birds at wind farms.

Areas of research can be grouped into four themes:

  1. Displacement
  2. Collision risk
  3. Cumulative impacts
  4. Habitat management

Research needs to be undertaken in phases, with each phase building on the results of the earlier projects.
